English Language Courses

ENGL 101: An Introduction to Academic Discourse

Prerequisites: ENGL005

ENGL 101 is an intensive course (45 contact hours over a fifteen-week semester) that focuses on reading and writing in English, with an emphasis on the language skills necessary for success in college courses. The course aims to develop fluency in academic reading and writing, based on the principle: "Read well to write well."
Students interact with various reading materials, such as encyclopedias, magazines, newspapers, and websites, and learn strategies to handle each genre independently and effectively. The writing component includes argumentation and rhetorical modes such as definition, description, exemplification, causal analysis, and comparison. Students learn the writing process and are introduced to paragraph structure, cohesion, conciseness, unity, and the use of specific details. Common grammar and sentence structure errors are also addressed.
The vocabulary component draws from the Academic Word List, which contains frequently occurring words from a wide range of academic texts. Additionally, students give short talks on various topics.

ENGL 102: An Introduction to Report Writing

Prerequisites: ENGL 101

Students write a term report on a specific topic. They are introduced to basic research skills, including the use of the Internet, the University’s databases, and print collections. They learn about document design, the MLA (Modern Language Association) style of citation, evaluating sources, summarizing, outlining, note-taking, drafting, revising, and editing. Academic integrity in report writing is emphasized.
Their reading skills are further developed through exposure to various graphical sources, such as charts, graphs, and diagrams. Students are taught presentation skills and present their findings in a PowerPoint presentation based on their term report.
The ENGL 102 course then explores three common academic rhetorical modes: summary and critique, analysis, discussion synthesis, and report writing. Students will learn the purpose and key elements of each mode and practice writing, evaluating, and revising. They will also learn techniques for introducing, developing, and concluding their work and presenting it verbally. These modes are based on selected reading themes assigned by the instructor, along with related vocabulary.

ENGL 201 : Technical Writing

Prerequisites: ENGL 102

The goal of Technical Communication is to enhance students' reading, writing, oral, and electronic skills to enable them to communicate effectively in English. The course covers research, organizing collected information, writing audience-centered technical reports and correspondence, and preparing oral presentations of their reports. The course will also help students develop collaborative work skills. It will enable students to build the ability to compose various types of business correspondence, such as memos, emails, and business letters. The course will provide significant opportunities for students to function effectively not only in the academic environment but also in their future professional careers.
